MICHAEL JACKSON IS STILL DEAD!

Are we really, really going to glorify this idiot?

I refrain from talking about people who just died.

Blogs particularly seem to be a venue where we often comment on the passing of the rich and famous. Is it a question of morbid curiosity or just a matter of paying homage to our icons?

I wonder sometimes. The same phenomena that makes people slow down when they see an accident on the side of the road could well motivate much of this rather public outpouring of grief.

Michael Jackson is dead and I think, ‘So what.’ The Michael Jackson I knew and liked died a long time ago and in his place there stood a twisted, warped individual who had a unnatural predilection to spend time with young children in a manner that had many people raising their eyebrows.

I’ve never been a big fan of Jackson’s once I was out of my early teens, to me my memories of his music are based around pop standards which broke when I was on the cusp of being a teenager. My first 45 record was a pressing of the Jackson 5’s I Want You Back (my second was an O’Jays single). To me songs like the aforementioned I Want You Back , ABC, The Love You Save are what...

I guess I started this a long, long time ago since Jackson has been dead for some time. I looked and it appears I started this back in July of 2009.

I have this project I’ve wanted to give the blog over to but I haven’t gotten around to it as yet. Michael Jackson would figure somewhat in that project. In the meantime I can be a dick about other things.

The first 45 I ever got which I think I got from my half sister because I certainly don’t remember buying it myself was I Want You Back. I think actually she passed it over to my father and since we were all of us together (mom, dad and me) post divorce briefly in a one room apartment playing a record on a small portable record player was about as much fun as could be had at least if you were staying in the house and not going outside and playing.

Michael Jackson was really something special back then, all the Jackson Five were... I mean they even had a Saturday Morning Cartoon!

Anyway, there were a couple of years where they were just everywhere and as a kid they were one of the things about the seventies that you would always remember. When you look back at Michael Jackson and then see where he wound up you have to wonder how much pain someone can carry around with them. That’s not to excuse any misdeeds but a person doesn’t arrive at a place fully realized in the blink of an eye, it takes years for someone to voyage to who they are and Jackson was no different.

I could post some more videos of the Jackson Five from that period and they’re easy enough to find on YouTube if you want. You really should check them out because the Jackson Five were performers to be sure and it’s really something to see especially when you imagine that at a time when there was so much strife going on inside the country the Jackson Five appealed to so many people and that’s likely what made them so very special.

It’s just sad to see where people end up though.
